Verbos seguidos pelo infinitivo

Muitos verbos diferentes podem ser ou são seguidos por um segundo verbo no infinitivo. Todos os verbos relacionados nesta páginas, quando acompanhados pelo infinitivo, são seguidos por um infinitivo com "to". Os verbos marcados com um asterisco também podem ser seguidos por uma oração iniciada por "that", como apresentado nos exemplos. Os verbos marcados com dois asteriscos somente podem ser seguidos por uma oração iniciada por "that" quando o sujeito do verbo principal for "it".

Verbos que não recebem substantivo antes de oração iniciada por "that"

Quando determinados verbos são seguidos por uma oração iniciada por "that", não há substantivo antes dessa oração, mesmo que exista um substantivo antes do infinitivo. Esse é o caso com os verbos "command", "direct", "entreat", "implore", "order", "require" e "trust".

Verbos que recebem substantivo antes de oração iniciada por "that"

Outros verbos, quando seguidos por uma oração iniciada por "that", exigem um substantivo antes dessa oração, igualmente ao que ocorre quando a construção utiliza o infinitivo. Esse é o caso com os verbos "persuade" e "remind".

Verbos com substantivo opcional antes de oração iniciada por "that"

Há um grupo final de verbos que, quando seguidos por uma oração iniciada por "that", podem ou não receber um substantivo antes dessa oração. Esse é o caso com os verbos "instruct", "teach" e "warn".

Utilizando "to dare"

Nas orações negativas e interrogativas, é possível utilizar o infinitivo com ou sem "to" sempre que o sujeito de ambos os verbos for o mesmo, embora seja mais comum omitir o termo "to". Se o sujeito dos dois verbos for diferente, a partícula "to" deverá ser inclusa.
